OK, the CONFIGURE_ARGS line now looks like this:
CONFIGURE_ARGS= --enable-xvmc --enable-opengl-vsync --disable-directfb --enable-ivtv \
                --disable-xvmc-pro --disable-xvmc-vld --disable-xvmcw \
                --disable-dvb --extra-ldflags="-L. -L/usr/local/lib" \
                --prefix=${PREFIX} --extra-cflags="-g -I. -I/usr/local/include" --extra-cxxflags=-g

and it gets a bit further before it dies:
