this is the path i took, as it was the same with my old card

yup.  and dmesg sez

# dmesg | grep pcm
pcm0: <Intel 82801BA (ICH2)> port 0xef00-0xef3f,0xe800-0xe8ff irq 10 at device 31.5 on pci0
pcm0: measured ac97 link rate at 55924 Hz

but, running apps such as mpg123 produces no sound.  interestingly,
though mpg123 is not whining, a clue may be that xmixer's speaker
colum has an X at the bottom.
